Lipomas are benign growths of fatty tissue. They can be inherited or
acquired later in life. They are formed from basically normal tissue that
grows out of control. This same process results in other kinds of growths
in other parts of the body. Uterine fibroids, for example, are also
abnormal growths (of the muscle cells of the uterus).
