Hillary,
Not only do tropical storms and hurricanes move into the Gulf of Mexico
from the Carribbean and Atlantic, they also form in the Gulf. In fact,
early in the hurricane season, which runs from June through November in the
Atlantic basin, the Gulf of Mexico is a favored area for tropical storm
formation. As the summer goes on, the area favored for formation
shifts to the Carribbean and Atlantic, then late in Ocober back
towards the Gulf of Mexico. Check out the images on this page from the National Weather
Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles Lousisiana and this one on
Tropical Cyclone Probabilities from the National Weather Service
Scientific Services division.
