Subject: how good is a guinea pig's memory? and sense of smell?

we made a maze to see if our 3 guinea pigs would be able to find their way 
through it quickly to the end.  we put food at the end. the guinea pigs got 
faster each time on their 3 turns on the first day. but on their first turn on 
the next day they were slower though they all got faster times on the next 2 
times  even though we took the food away on the last turn. we sprayed air 
freshner in between each guinea pig's turn in the maze.  we decided that the 
guinea pigs forgot about the maze during the night.  do you think that they 
smelled which way to go or remembered?
