No, the carbonation in soft drinks does not affect athletic performance, but there maybe several problems with the soda or soft drink that your coach is concerned about with athletes. There is a very high sugar load with the non-diet sodas that can cause problems with the stomach not emptying well especially with lots/long exercise, so there is more potential for upset stomach and even vomitting. Also some sodas have a caffeine load which may make dehydration more a problem. The best fluid pre-exercise is still water, for long endurance events or practices with a high heat index, the sport drinks that have not only some calories, but also minerals for replacement are a good substance for during and after the event. For further information about Sports Nutrition the American Dietetic Association has a good article in their June 1993 (Vol. 93 p.691-695) on energy needs as well as hydration for athletes.
