Hello Katie
Hippos don't have bulletproof skin any more than you or I do, but they
certainly have a thick hide, a good layer of subcutaneous fat and a strong
skeleton. This means that anyone wanting to kill a hippo with a gun would
have to use ammunition of a big enough calibre and be skilful enough to
aim pretty carefully, too. Sadly, there's plenty of both out there! The
numbers of hippos are decreasing, or are at least unstable, in many of the
areas where they are naturally found. This is likely to be due to habitat
loss and disturbance. You can visit http://www.v
et.ed.ac.uk/students/taxonomy/amphibius.htm
for information about hippos and http://www.iucn.org
or http://www.redlist.org
for information about their status. The common hippo isn't listed as a
threatened species in the IUCN Red List, but the Pigmy Hippo is!
