I am a science teacher in Ontario, Canada.

Recently we received a safety warning regarding gas discharge tubes. We were
told they could produce X-Rays, because high energy electrons could encounter
heavy metals. The question our dept. would like to know, is if it is dangerous
to use a Van der Graaf Generator to light up a fluorescent bulb (a common
demonstration) because of the mercury inside the bulb.

Any info would be appreciated.
